Organizations in Iraq

Al Basra.net

Albasrah.net first appeared in April 2003. Our intention was to bring together everything about the beautiful city of al-Basrah – its history, culture, heritage, and art. But the invasion of Iraq by the international terrorist mafia gangs compelled us to focus on what was more important in this critical period than the history of our Arab nation and our beloved country, namely the defense of Iraq. Our task then became to gather together and present all the news and facts – written articles, video clips, and sound recordings – in both Arabic and English – that expose the occupation and shed light on its crimes and its true aims. We also strive to protect patriotic, Arab nationalist, and Islamic readers from the falsification and distortion of their identity and from being strung along by the lies of the misleading media.

Christian Peacemakers Team

CPT initiated a long-term presence in Iraq in October 2002, six months before the beginning of the U.S. led invasion in March of 2003. The primary focus of the team for eighteen months following the invasion was documenting and focusing attention on the issue of detainee abuses and basic legal and human rights being denied them. Issues related to detainees remain the current focus, but the work has expanded to include efforts to end occupation and militarization of the country and to foster nonviolent and just alternatives for a free and independent Iraq.

Organizations in the U.S.

Anti-War Committee

The Anti-War Committee began in Minneapolis in December 1998, with 13 people who committed civil disobedience to protest the bombing of Iraq. We educate ourselves and the community about the injustices of U.S. foreign policy. We work to organize a broad-based peace and social justice movement which stands in solidarity with those communities, here and abroad, who are unjustly and cruelly affected by U.S. foreign policies. Our values are manifest in our core principles of self-determination for all oppressed peoples and countries, and peace through justice.

Women Against Military Madness

WAMM is hundreds of women and men empowered to make social change through volunteer activism! WAMM is a nonviolent feminist organization that works in solidarity with others to create a system of social equality, self-determination and justice through education and empowerment of women. WAMM's purpose is to dismantle systems of militarism and global oppression. Since September 11, 2001, WAMM has been focused on opposing the “war on terrorism” in all its forms, including attacks on the civil liberties of immigrants and activists. A new committee has formed to expose the danger of depleted uranium munitions, and we expanded WAMM staff hours to allow us to do a larger amount of program work.

Dahr Jamail's MidEast Dispatches

In late 2003, weary of the overall failure of the US media to accurately report on the realities of the war in Iraq for the Iraqi people and US soldiers, Dahr Jamail went to Iraq to report on the war himself. Dahr has spent a total of 8 months in occupied Iraq as one of only a few independent US journalists in the country. In the MidEast, Dahr has also has reported from Syria, Lebanon and Jordan.

BRussells Tribunal

The BRussells Tribunal is a think tank with activist overtones that denounces the logic of permanent war promoted by the American goverment and its allies, affecting for the time being particularly one region in the world: the Middle East. It started with a people's court against the PNAC and its role in the illegal invasion of Iraq, but continued ever since. It tries to be a bridge between the intellectual resistance in the Arab World and the Western peace movements.
